gradingandassessment

The fifth grade report card features letter grades and teacher comments.  Most work will be graded with numerical scores or letter grades and will be averaged for term grades.

Numerical Scores and Letter Grades:

Numerical scores (percentages) will be given on all objective tests, some project work and some homework assignments.  Letter grades may be given on essay tests as well as projects and homework.

97%-100%= A+                                   77%-79%= C+
93%-96%= A                                     73%-76%= C
90%-92%= A-                                    70%-72%= C-

87%-89%= B+                                    67%-69%= D+
83%-86%= B                                     63%-66%= D
80%-82%= B-                                    60%-62%= D-
*Below 60 is a failing grade

Check System:
Used to assess work that is practice of a skill being learned
√+ High quality/ excellent work
√  Satisfactory/Grade Level work
√- Unsatisfactory

This scale may be used with the following:
*Spelling                                        *Journal pages
*Proofreading work                        *Penmanship
*Vocabulary work                           *Some math pages
*Work corrected in class
*Some science/social studies

Holistic Scoring:
A six point scoring scale will be used on student writing that has been through at least one revision process.  This scale matches the grading scale used to score the writing portion of the CMT.  A letter grade may also be assigned to essays written.

Rubrics:
Some project/activity/report work may be graded using a rubric.  A rubric assigns a point value in correspondence with specific elements and levels of skill or mastery.  Students are often asked to self assess their work using the rubric before submitting it for teacher evaluation.  This will often lead to self-correction and improvement.  A sample rubric is attached.

Other:
In order to keep you informed of your child’s progress, all tests, quizzes, and project grading sheets below 75% will require a parent signature.
